The biggest enemy the Watchtower Corporation faces now is "The Truth"

thats my opinion because the wts really has been preaching false information now for so long about the end times and armageddon soon.. also the doctrine that jesus chirt has taken a position over his earthly and heavenly kingdom in 1914 .... etc.

its been a winfall marketing scheme for such a long time, which now really doesn't have much leg to stand on.. time in conjunction with reality has made the wts's doctrines redundantly weak or useless more or less.. i'm even believing the leaders of the wts are even starting to know this for themselves.. the wts future and its main supporting pieces of literature, the watchtower and awake magazines may eventually be tossed aside.

for some new doctrines as well newly named pieces of literature .

I know everyone here expects them to collapse under the weight of their failed predictions, but hate to tell you all that it's not going to happen: they GREW after the 1975 prediction, as it swelled their ranks! They are SLOWLY shifting their platform away from setting specific dates, and more on preparing for an unset date for Armageddon.

Look at it this way: Jesus and his apostles believed THEY were living in the last days, 2,000 yrs ago! The BIGGEST FAILED PROPHECY OF ALL, the one Jesus Himself predicted, FAILED. Did that stop any of you from getting involved, or your parents?

The fact is, ALL religions show a gradual shift in position, and we're able to look back 150 years and see the shift that says FAKE! However, I KNOW JWs who've seen the same evidence, and it doesn't phase them in the LEAST. Why? One sad element of the human psyche is that most humans will only believe what they WANT to believe: most are not as open-minded as they think. Some MIGHT see the changes, and they WILL lose the few who are able to think. But for every one lost, there's many more who'll fill in the vacancy. Apply, lather, rinse, repeat.

So I wouldn't waste too much energy hoping they all will see "the TRUE light": they probably WON'T, and will die as firmly convinced of "The Truth" as they did back in 1960 (or 1920, or 1890, or).

Uh, the word that was written was HAD, when it should've been KNEW, in the Biblical sense. The "wives" thing was only because the motels made me put their names in the scroll on that line.

And I don't mean to brag, but let's just put it this way: the inerrant word of THE LORD was trying to downplay my escapades: the actual number was MUCH HIGHER. I got more action than that Joseph dude ever DREAMED of <wink, wink, nudge, nudge> ....

Parties puff you up with pride

this is not a new topic but one i had a chance to ponder recently.

the dubs taught any parties in a person's honor puffed them up with pride and hence jehoopla hated them.

ex--birthdays, graduations, etc.

I remember the first Xmas I celebrated on my own: it really meant so much, as instead of worried about the "pagan roots" I could see it was about sharing it with my GF and her son (she let me share her Xmas with them). Really quite a fond memory.

But yes, the "no birthday, etc" thing falls perfectly in line with the general principle of deprecating the individual vs the group, built on assumptions that mere mortal humans are unworthy of praise, but deserving of condemnation. It's FUBARed with a capital F.

It's also consistent with the reason why some Xians get extremely uncomfortable if given a compliment, and always feel the need to deflect the praise to their creator, "to the Glory of God". This leads to social awkwardness, since they've never learned to accept ANY compliment, so even a polite offering becomes a need to get into how all credit goes to their God, etc. That leads to the impression of their being pompous arses, as they will do this for even trivial compliments. It reminds me of the old saying, "Don't be so humble: you're not THAT great".

But yeah, this is one manifestation of a high-control group, and the mind-reaming begins on Day One (and the parents often don't even understand that they're doing it).

Break the cycle, by all means. Don't live a thoughtless life.....

As far as how they spend their time, the 'overseeing the work' thing is good (doesn't that just make you feel all warm and fuzzy, knowing there's a giant eye in the sky watching you 24/7?), but I thought they had to sing the praises of YHWH in a song that's really tricky to sing, and takes ALOT of choir practice.

There's also a reference to washing the robes of martyrs with the blood of the ram, making them white (i.e. pure: wait, I thought blood was..... nevermind...), so apparently there's a laundry detail up there. What, you didn't really think those robes were going to whiten on their OWN, did you?

The 144,000 is a symbolic number not to be taken literal.

Don't mean to quibble, but ALL numbers ARE symbolic: they're all squiggly marks written on a paper (or screen, etc) that represent a quantity of something else they're depicting.

Perhaps you are trying to say the number is not meant to be an accurate representation, but an estimate pulled out of someone's bum, because it sounded really big? Maybe.

The Bible is loaded with numerology that is missed by most modern readers. My understanding is that it is the square of 12 (i.e. 12 X 12 = 144, significant of the 12 tribes of Israel, then adding a bunch of zeroes at the end, to make it a REALLY BIG number).

I personally think there must be a Trinity-like deal going on, where all of the Anointed Ones who come are forced to double- and triple-up inside a single angelic "body", since they're very little cramped on single-room spirits. Think of it like a roommate, except a roomie within the spirit domain.

Ohh, I thought it was a "martyrs only" club? Also, no women, and no males who aren't virgins. It's very exclusive, and it seems like you've gotta know peepol to get in....

i find it incredible that the public doesn't know this.

the watchtower society is showing callous disregard for the rights and safety of the public.. i really think we need to make an effort to get the word out.

the watchtower society and child abuse are in the news now, especially with the candace conti case and the recent actions of anonymous.. do you think we can get a newspaper interested in covering this story?

Of course, here in CA, JWs make a note of sexual predators in their area by checking the web where the info is availble (thanks to Megan's Law), and adding them to their database of addresses which are handed out to publishers.

I won't make any snarky comments about whether they do so to recruit them, or to avoid them... (ohhh, I think I just did). ;)

OGD are you creating a straw-man here, or was a truly-inflammatory, unsupported needlessly provocative post deleted (that hopefully contained something far worse than THAT)?

I know that some people are offended at the mere thought of being offended by something others say, but this is a head-scratcher....

Cultural anthropologists define the word 'myth' very differently from the layperson's definition, focusing instead on the function the belief serves the community. Using the word myth doesn't carry any judgment of it's true or falsehood, but simply focuses on the role the belief affords the society which uses it.

In the case of the Hebraic/Jewish tradition, the function afforded by the belief is unifying, offering a sense of belonging to the community which was threatened by syncretism, military attack by foreigners and subsequent slavery (asking, "why has God foresaken us?"), etc. The technology of scrolls afforded literacy, a way to spread and record a unified message to allow the culture not to be lost.

That stated, I personally belief that ALL of the World's myths are FALSE, since all are early (and even current) humans' attempts to answer the unanswerable questions of, "why are we here?" and "how did this all come into being?"

BTW, if you haven't looked into the much older creation myths of the Akkadians, Babylonians, Greeks, etc, you're missing out on the likely source of your own ancestor's beliefs. As the Bible itself indicates, there is nothing new under the Sun, including the ideas contained in the Old Testament.
